General job description

The Project Manager (PM) manages a number of technology and/or drug discovery projects towards timely and successful delivery within budget together with multi-disciplinary project teams.

The PM reports to the Head of Project and Portfolio Management and works closely with the Discovery Project Leaders, other project team members, heads of department and finance controlling. The PM ensures adequate interactions of the project team with the relevant project governance bodies (R&D Leadership Team, Management Team).

This new position will be based in Zwijnaarde, Ghent.


Responsibilities and Duties

The Project Manager’s duties shall include, but not be limited to:

  • Manages (technology and/or drug) discovery projects according to agreed scope, timelines and budget by providing managerial and operational leadership.
  • Manages multidisciplinary project teams by facilitation, enabling smooth communication, issue resolution and decision-making.
  • Ensures timely, open and effective communication to relevant stakeholders, incl. teams, collaborators, management, contractual partners.
  • Manages team dynamics to get a highly engaged and motivated team (team building) and integrates new functions as required.
  • Builds the operational project plan, defines goals & objectives and develops the budget/forecast with the multidisciplinary team and in line with the company’s strategy.
  • Drives project risk identification, analysis, response, and monitors mitigations to minimize impact to the project or wider business.
  • Leads cross-functional project team meetings, including the preparation, execution and follow-up (minutes, action items).
  • Manages interactions with the collaboration partner’s project team (as required) to ensure alignment on project scope, planning, budget and progress.
  • Provides periodic progress reports to Management Team, develops project scenarios with the team (as required), prepares for quarterly Project review meetings and represents the project at project governance meetings (e.g. stage-gates).

Job requirements

Education:

Master degree in a life science, engineering, applied science, or related field or equal by experience

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in companies engaged in biotech and/or pharmaceutical research
  • Formal project management training (preferably based on Project Management Institute principles)
  • Experience with teams of skilled scientists
  • Proven track record of working collaboratively to drive project progression

  • Ability to execute on initiatives and solve problems (‘get things done’)
  • Ability to foster teamwork, work collaboratively, communicate and network effectively
  • Sense of urgency, hands-on and result-oriented mindset
  • Ability to deal with continuous change and multitask
  • Excellent understanding of Microsoft 365 (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote) and project management software (MS Project)
  • Financial/budget fluency
  • Fluent in English
  • PMP (Project Management Professional) or CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) certification is a plus
